A no drama cloud migration checklist covering inventory, landing zones, security, cutover, and cost controls for mid market IT teams.
Cloud migration fails when teams treat it as a lift and shift weekend. Successful programs sequence discovery, platform readiness, security, and cutover. Use this checklist before the first workload moves.
1. Build a real application inventory
List every application, integration, data store, and owner. Tag criticality, data sensitivity, peak load, and license constraints. Mark candidates for retire, retain, replatform, refactor, or rebuild.
2. Design the landing zone before you migrate
Accounts, networks, identity, logging, backup, and guardrails should exist before production traffic. Skipping this creates shadow accounts and inconsistent security later.
- Central identity and SSO
- Network segmentation and private connectivity
- Baseline encryption and key management
- Central logs, alerts, and backup policy
- Budget alerts and tag standards
3. Pick migration waves by risk and value
Start with low dependency systems that still prove your pipeline. Parallel workstreams for data, app, and network reduce surprises. Avoid big bang cutovers unless downtime windows and rollbacks are rehearsed.
4. Put cost controls in the same sprint as migration
Right size instances, turn off unused environments, and set reservation or savings strategies where usage is steady. Track unit cost for key transactions, not only monthly invoices.
5. Rehearse cutover and rollback
Document DNS, traffic shifting, data sync, and communication plans. Run a game day with ops, security, and business owners. If rollback is unclear, you are not ready.
Caystard Group builds cloud landing zones and migration factories for teams that need production confidence without bloated program overhead. Share your current estate map and we can help sequence the first wave.
